China Released Millions of Fish Into The Yangtze River — The Results Shocked The World

China released millions of fish into the Yangtze River and banned fishing for 10 years, and the results shocked the world. From Yichang and the Three Gorges Dam to Wuhan, Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake, and all the way to Shanghai, the Yangtze, Asia’s longest river, had almost collapsed. The Yangtze river dolphin (baiji) disappeared, the Chinese paddlefish was declared extinct in 2022, and the wild fish catch fell from over 400,000 tonnes to under 100,000 tonnes a year. So on January 1, 2021, China started a 10-year Yangtze fishing ban, retired around 111,000 fishing boats, brought about 230,000 fishermen ashore, and launched massive fish restocking and river restoration programs. In this video, we break down the full story: the collapse of the Yangtze fishery, the ten-year fishing ban, what happened to the fishermen who became river guardians, how fish hatcheries release millions of carp and Chinese sturgeon, why the Gezhouba and Three Gorges dams blocked the sturgeon’s spawning route, the ecological flood releases from the Three Gorges Dam to help carp spawn, and the results: 227 native fish species recorded in 2023 (34 more than before the ban) and the Yangtze finless porpoise rising to about 1,249, the first increase ever recorded. If you’re interested in river restoration, wildlife conservation, endangered species, China’s environment, fish restocking, or how China is saving the Yangtze, this video explains the real story behind the headline, including what never came back.
