The Book of Enoch Says 200 Angels Swore an Oath on a Mountain — And Describes What They Were Afraid
In 1 Enoch 6:6, two hundred angels descend on the summit of Mount Hermon and swear an oath, binding themselves "by mutual imprecations" never to abandon their plan. But a few lines earlier, their leader Semjaza says something almost everyone reads past: he is afraid. Not of the sin itself, but of being left to pay for it alone.
We read the story slowly, chapter and verse, from the R. H. Charles translation (1917): the oath on Hermon, what the Watchers taught, the sentence in chapter 10, the angels who could not lift their eyes to heaven, the strange moment when they asked a human being to pray for them, and Enoch's vision of the house that was "hot as fire and cold as ice." Along the way, the lines in your own Bible that stand on this page: Genesis 6, Jude 6, 2 Peter 2:4, Daniel 4 and 7, Psalm 133.
Five fears are written into this story. Four belong to the angels. The fifth belongs to a man, and it is the only one heaven answers out loud.
